Larry McAnally, Revenue Officer for the City of Tuscumbia, retired April 1, 2008. Larry served the City of Tuscumbia for 23 years. Larry started with the Tuscumbia Police Department in 1985. In 2001, Larry was promoted to Chief of Police. When the mayor and city council realized Tuscumbia needed a revenue officer, Larry took the job and increased the city's revenue. Larry has been a member of AMROA since 2005. We wish him well!

Watson Returns! - Message from Enterprise

Carl Watson, Revenue Officer with the City of Enterprise, recently returned to work after serving our country in Iraq.  Carl served a tour of 7 months in Iraq before incurring injuries and returning stateside. Carl was then stationed in Ft Gordon, Georgia for the remaining 14 months of his tour. Carl was released from military service and is back home in Enterprise where he has resumed his title of Revenue Officer. Carl was a member of AMROA before being called to active duty.  Carl plans to return to the AMROA organization as well and complete his Revenue Officer Certification.  Please join the City of Enterprise in welcoming Carl Watson back.

Linda Barrett Makes the Runoff!

Gadsden Revenue Officer Linda Barrett is running for the Revenue Commissioner's office in Etowah County In the June 3rd election, Linda had 48.39% of the vote but needed 50% of the vote to win the primary.  There were five democratic candidates, so 48.39% is very impressive.  The run-off is July 15th.  We wish Linda much success in the runoff.

Boyles Promoted in Decatur

AMROA President Tina Boyles has been promoted to Revenue Administrator for the City of Decatur.  We want to congratulate her and also recognize Decatur for making such a smart move!

ABERCROMBIE RETIRES AND FEGER STEPS UP

John Abercrombie, CMRO and a loyal AMROA member, recently retired from the City of Montevallo.  We will all miss seeing John at our AMROA events and wish him a fun and happy retirement!  AMROA member and active ListServe participant Amy Feger has been promoted to Revenue Officer to fill John’s shoes.  Montevallo is lucky to have Amy trained and ready-to-serve in that position.  Congratulations, Amy!

AMROA Elects 2007-2008 Officers

2007-2008 Officers - Gwen Hall (Mobile) President-Elect, Tina Boyles (Decatur) President, Kathy Woodard (Orange Beach) Secretary, Haley Burford (Gadsden) Treasurer [Not pictured - Melissa Maledy (Enterprise) Vice President]

During the 2007 Annual Summer Conference and Business Meeting, the AMROA membership elected a full slate of female officers. During the first twelve years of the Association's existence, no woman held a leadership position. Why? There were few revenue officials of either gender during the 70's. In fact, AMROA was created to promote specialization in the field of revenue. A few men of vision put the wheels in motion in 1970. (See the "History" page.) Velma Gober (Wetumpka) was the first female president of AMROA serving during 1984-85, fourteen years after the organization held the first official AMROA meeting. However, our system of checks and balances is still in place! The Board is still dominated by men! We take great pride in all of these officers and directors and extend our appreciation not only to them, but also to their cities for permitting them the time to serve our great organization.

Installation of new officers and directors took place during the banquet at the Summer Conference in Florence, Alabama. Judge Frank A. Long, Ret. graciously devoted his time to the task of administering the oath of office. At the first meeting of the Board, Pat Hyland was elected Chairman for 2007-2008. The 2007-2008 Board is shown below with Judge Long.

The Alabama "Delegation"

Alabama was well represented at the recent NBBLO conference held in Washington, D.C. AMROA members Tina Boyles (Decatur), Bill Fetner (Orange Beach), Gwen Hall (Mobile) and Marcia Ward (Gulf Shores) enjoyed the sights as well as the education offered at the conference. The 2008 NBBLO conference is scheduled in Denver, Colorado next July.
